Biennial.

Height.    20 - 40cm

Flowers.  Flowerheads 15 - 40mm, solitary or in groups of 2 to 5, rayless but with numerous spreading shiny yellowish bracts. In the first year the plant produces a leafy rosette, this withers before the plant flowers in the second year. "Flowers" open in dry weather and close when wet or damp.

Flowering period.  July - Sept.

Habitat.   Dry grassland with poor light or sandy calcareous soils.
