Perennial.

Height.    Tall, much branched, sometimes reaching 1.5metres.

Flowers.  Brownish-violet or greenish, nodding bells. Berries shiny and black when ripe. All parts of the plant are very poisonous.

Flowering period.  April - Nov

Habitat.    Damp shady places, woodland clearings, footpaths, scrub. Mainly calcareous soils.
